Growing up in the greater Boston area, she began playing cello at age four with Suzuki teacher and trainer Nancy Hair. She has taught young cellists and adult beginners using the Suzuki method for over a decade, and has coached chamber music ensembles of young musicians. Katherine is passionate about creating opportunities for collaboration, especially through chamber music. Recently based in Asheville, NC, she performed with Panharmonia, Asheville Baroque Concerts, and the Asheville Amadeus Festival. She has attended numerous chamber music festivals, including New Music on the Point, where she performed with the International Contemporary Ensemble and the JACK Quartet. She has collaborated with numerous new and emerging composers, and has premiered and contributed to dozens of new works by her contemporaries. Katherine’s repertoire includes a wide range of early and new music. She performs on the viola da gamba and baroque cello, and attended baroque institutes at Oberlin College and Longy School of Music. She earned her MM in violin performance from the University of Colorado Boulder studying with Claude Sim and her BA in music and mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studying violin with David Neely and viola with Clark Potter and Jonah Sirota. Other former teachers include Stirling Trent, Anne Nagosky, Mary Roseberry-Brown, and Shirley Harrison. Currently, An performs as a freelance musician in the Kansas City area. She is a member of the Wichita Symphony and a substitute violinist for the Kansas City Symphony and Omaha Symphony. As a teacher, An has maintained a private studio since 2018. From 2018-2019, An was a violin-teaching intern at Nissa’s String Studio in Lincoln, Nebraska, teaching students, substituting for other teachers, and assisting with administrative tasks. She also previously taught at Fiddlestick Music and Bay View Music Festival and was a teaching assistant for the undergraduate orchestral excerpts class at CU.
